As a foreigner living in Pula, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Pula if they have access to public healthcare in Pula. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"As a foreigner living in Pula, you will have access to public healthcare, provided you have registered for it and are making the necessary contributions. The Croatian healthcare system is generally of a high standard, with well-trained medical staff and modern facilities. However, it's important to note that the system is funded through a mandatory healthcare insurance, so you will need to ensure you are properly registered and contributing to this system to access care. The public healthcare system in Croatia covers a wide range of services, including general practice, specialist consultations, hospital treatment, maternity care, and some dental care. However, there may be some services or treatments that are not covered, or only partially covered, by the public system. In these cases, you may need to pay for these services yourself or take out additional private health insurance. While the quality of care is generally good, you may find that there are sometimes long waiting times for non-emergency treatments and procedures. This is due to the high demand for these services. In addition, while many doctors and nurses in Croatia speak English, particularly in larger cities and tourist areas, this may not always be the case in smaller towns or rural areas. In terms of pharmacies, they are widely available and well-stocked in Pula and throughout Croatia. Prescription medications are usually affordable, but over-the-counter medications can be more expensive than in some other countries. Overall, while the Croatian healthcare system has its challenges, as a foreigner living in Pula, you should be able to access good quality healthcare, provided you have registered for and are contributing to the mandatory healthcare insurance system," said another in Pula, Croatia.
