As a foreigner living in Hasselt, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Hasselt if they have access to public healthcare in Hasselt. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Hasselt, you will have access to public healthcare. Belgium has a high standard of healthcare which is funded by social security contributions and is accessible to all residents. The system is based on mandatory health insurance which covers a large part of the cost of services, including consultations, treatments, and medication. The healthcare system in Belgium is divided into state and private sectors, with fees payable in both. In the public sector, the patient can choose their doctor and hospital. The patient pays the doctor and then receives a refund of a significant part of the fee from their health insurance fund. Belgium is known for its excellent healthcare facilities and highly qualified medical professionals. The hospitals are well-equipped, and the country has one of the highest ratios of doctors to population in the world. Pharmacies are widely available and are usually open during normal shopping hours. Some pharmacies also provide a 24-hour service. Dental care is also part of the healthcare system, but it is less heavily subsidized than other medical care. In terms of mental health, Belgium has a wide range of services, including psychotherapy and counseling, and these are also covered by the health insurance system. Overall, while living in Hasselt, Belgium, you can expect a high standard of healthcare that is accessible and affordable," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Hasselt, Belgium.
