As a foreigner living in La Rochelle, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in La Rochelle if they have access to public healthcare in La Rochelle. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in La Rochelle, you will have access to public healthcare. France has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. The public healthcare system, known as Assurance Maladie, covers a large portion of healthcare costs for residents, including doctor visits, hospital stays, and medications. However, it's important to note that the system is not completely free. Patients usually pay upfront for medical services and then get reimbursed a percentage of the cost by the Assurance Maladie. The exact amount of reimbursement depends on the type of treatment and the patient's specific healthcare plan. In addition to the public healthcare system, many residents also have a private health insurance policy, known as a "mutuelle," to cover the costs not reimbursed by the Assurance Maladie. The quality of healthcare in France is generally very high. Hospitals and clinics are well-equipped, and doctors and other healthcare professionals are highly trained. However, there can sometimes be long wait times for non-emergency appointments and procedures. In terms of access, as a foreigner, you will need to be a legal resident in France and contribute to the French social security system to be eligible for the Assurance Maladie. This usually involves working in France or being the spouse or dependent of someone who does. If you are an EU citizen, you may also be able to use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for necessary healthcare during a temporary stay in France. However, this is not a substitute for comprehensive health insurance, and it's recommended to have additional private insurance coverage. In conclusion, while the French healthcare system can be complex, it provides comprehensive coverage and high-quality care. As a foreigner, you will need to navigate the system and ensure you have the necessary coverage, but you will have access to one of the best healthcare systems in the world," said a member in La Rochelle, France.
