As a foreigner living in Nantes, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Nantes if they have access to public healthcare in Nantes. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"Yes, as a foreigner living in Nantes, you will have access to public healthcare. France has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. It is a universal service providing healthcare for every citizen, regardless of wealth, age, or social status. The French healthcare system is a mix of public and private providers. The state, through a system of social security, funds a large proportion of the health care expenses. The system is funded by payments from the salaries of workers, and the government covers a large portion of the rest. In terms of quality, French healthcare is highly regarded. Hospitals in France are modern and well-equipped. Doctors are highly trained and medical staff are generally efficient and professional. However, it's important to note that while emergency care is provided free of charge, most other types of care, including visits to the doctor, are only partially reimbursed. Therefore, many residents choose to have additional private health insurance to cover the costs not reimbursed by the state. Pharmacies are widely available throughout Nantes and the rest of France. They are the only places where you can buy prescription and non-prescription drugs. In terms of language, while many doctors and medical staff speak English, it's not guaranteed. Therefore, it might be helpful to learn some basic French medical terms or have a translation app handy. Overall, while navigating the French healthcare system can be complex, especially for foreigners, the high standard of care makes it worth the effort," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Nantes, France.
