As a foreigner living in Toulouse, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Toulouse if they have access to public healthcare in Toulouse. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"Yes, as a foreigner living in Toulouse, you will have access to public healthcare. France has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. It is a universal service providing healthcare for every citizen, regardless of wealth, age, or social status. The French healthcare system is a mix of public and private providers. The government, through a single-payer system, funds a large part of healthcare. As a foreigner, you can access the French healthcare system if you are a legal resident and have lived in France for at least three months. You will need to apply for a French social security number, which will allow you to access healthcare services. The quality of healthcare in France is very high. Hospitals in France are modern and well-equipped, and the country is known for its excellent doctors and specialists. The healthcare system covers a wide range of health services, including general practice, specialist services, hospital care, home visits, and prescription medications. However, it's important to note that the French healthcare system is not entirely free. Most healthcare costs are reimbursed at a rate of 70%, meaning you will have to pay the remaining 30% out of pocket or through a private health insurance policy. In terms of waiting times, they can vary. For non-urgent appointments, there may be a wait, but for urgent care, the system is very efficient. Overall, the French healthcare system is comprehensive and provides high-quality care, but it's important to understand how it works and what costs you may be responsible for," remarked another expat who made the move to Toulouse, France.
