As a foreigner living in Avignon, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Avignon if they have access to public healthcare in Avignon. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Avignon, you will have access to public healthcare. France has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. It is a universal service providing healthcare for every citizen, regardless of wealth, age, or social status. The French healthcare system is a mix of public and private providers. The government, through a system of national health insurance, funds a significant portion of the healthcare provided. The quality of healthcare in Avignon, like the rest of France, is excellent. Hospitals and clinics are well-equipped, and doctors and other medical professionals are highly trained. You can expect a high standard of care, whether you're visiting a general practitioner or a specialist. However, it's important to note that while the French healthcare system is largely funded by the government, it's not entirely free. Patients usually pay a fee upfront for their medical services, which is then partially or fully reimbursed by the national health insurance. As a foreigner, you will need to register with the French healthcare system and apply for a health insurance card, known as the Carte Vitale, to access these services. This card will enable you to claim back the cost of most of your healthcare expenses. In addition to the public healthcare system, many people in France also have a private health insurance policy, known as a "mutuelle," to cover the costs not reimbursed by the state. This is particularly useful for more expensive treatments and procedures. Pharmacies are also an important part of the French healthcare system. They are widely available and can provide advice and treatment for minor ailments. In terms of emergency care, France has a well-organized system. In case of a medical emergency, you can dial 112, the European emergency number, which is free and accessible 24/7. Overall, as a foreigner living in Avignon, you can expect to have access to high-quality healthcare services, although you may need to navigate some administrative procedures to fully access these services," said a member in Avignon, France.
