As a foreigner living in Kalamata, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Kalamata if they have access to public healthcare in Kalamata. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Kalamata, you will have access to public healthcare. However, the quality and accessibility of healthcare can vary. The Greek healthcare system is a mix of public and private providers. Public healthcare is funded by social security contributions and taxes, and it is available to all residents of Greece, including foreigners. In general, the healthcare system in Greece is considered to be good, with a high standard of medical professionals and facilities. However, it is worth noting that the system has been under strain due to economic difficulties in the country, which has led to some issues with funding and resources. In terms of public hospitals, they are generally well-equipped and the staff is highly trained. However, they can be crowded and waiting times can be long, especially for non-emergency treatments. There is also a language barrier as not all staff may speak English fluently. Private healthcare in Greece is also an option and is often preferred by expats. Private hospitals and clinics generally have shorter waiting times and more English-speaking staff. However, they can be expensive if you do not have private health insurance. Pharmacies are widely available in Kalamata and throughout Greece, and many medications that would require a prescription in other countries can be bought over the counter in Greece. In terms of emergency services, the number to call is 112. Ambulance services are generally efficient, but response times can be slower in rural areas. Overall, while the Greek healthcare system has its challenges, you should be able to access the care you need while living in Kalamata. It is recommended to have comprehensive health insurance to cover any potential medical costs," commented one expat who made the move to Kalamata, Greece.
