As a foreigner living in Quetzaltenango, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Quetzaltenango if they have access to public healthcare in Quetzaltenango. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"As a foreigner living in Quetzaltenango, you will have access to public healthcare. However, it's important to note that the quality of public healthcare in Guatemala is not as high as in more developed countries. The public healthcare system, managed by the Guatemalan Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, is often understaffed and underfunded, leading to long wait times and a lack of resources. Public hospitals and clinics are available, but they are often crowded and may not have the most up-to-date equipment or facilities. Many doctors and nurses in the public system are dedicated and skilled, but they are often overwhelmed by the high demand for services. In addition, while basic healthcare is provided for free, there may be charges for certain services or medications. It's also worth noting that not all treatments or procedures may be available through the public system, particularly more specialized or complex treatments. Many foreigners and wealthier Guatemalans choose to use private healthcare providers, which are generally of a higher standard but come at a higher cost. Private hospitals and clinics are more likely to have English-speaking staff, shorter wait times, and more modern facilities and equipment. Regardless of whether you choose to use public or private healthcare, it's highly recommended to have comprehensive health insurance to cover any medical costs. It's also a good idea to have a plan in place for medical evacuation, as serious medical emergencies may require treatment outside of Guatemala," wrote a member who made the move to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.
