As a foreigner living in Livingston, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Livingston if they have access to public healthcare in Livingston. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"As a foreigner living in Livingston, you will have access to public healthcare, but it's important to note that the quality and availability of services can vary. The public healthcare system in Guatemala is known as the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance. It provides free medical care to all residents, including foreigners. However, the system is often underfunded and understaffed, leading to long wait times and a lack of certain treatments or medications. In rural areas like Livingston, the healthcare facilities may be even more limited. There might be a lack of specialized doctors and the medical equipment might not be as advanced as in the urban areas. It's also common for public hospitals and clinics to be overcrowded, and patients may need to bring their own basic supplies like syringes or bandages. Many foreigners and wealthier Guatemalans choose to use private healthcare, which is more expensive but generally offers a higher standard of care. Private hospitals and clinics are more likely to have English-speaking staff and shorter wait times. However, it's recommended to have a comprehensive health insurance that covers private healthcare costs. In terms of pharmacies, they are widely available and many medications that would require a prescription in other countries can be bought over the counter in Guatemala. However, counterfeit medications can be a problem, so it's advisable to only purchase from reputable pharmacies. In conclusion, while public healthcare is available in Livingston, Guatemala, the quality and availability of services can be inconsistent. It's advisable for foreigners to have a good health insurance plan that can cover private healthcare costs if necessary," said another in Livingston, Guatemala.
