As a foreigner living in SOPRON, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in SOPRON if they have access to public healthcare in SOPRON. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"As a foreigner living in Sopron, Hungary, you will have access to public healthcare, provided you have the necessary health insurance coverage. Hungary has a universal healthcare system, which means that all residents, including foreigners, have the right to access healthcare services. The quality of healthcare in Hungary is generally good, with well-trained medical staff and modern facilities. However, there may be some language barriers as not all healthcare professionals speak English fluently. In Sopron, there are several healthcare facilities, including hospitals and clinics, where you can receive treatment. The city is particularly known for its dental clinics, attracting many dental tourists from neighboring countries. The public healthcare system in Hungary is funded by social health insurance contributions. As a foreigner, you will need to have health insurance coverage, either through a private insurance company or through the social health insurance scheme, to access healthcare services. Emergency medical care is available to everyone in Hungary, regardless of their insurance status. However, for non-emergency care, you will need to have insurance coverage. While the public healthcare system in Hungary is generally efficient, there can be long waiting times for certain procedures. Therefore, some foreigners living in Hungary choose to take out private health insurance, which can provide quicker access to specialists and private hospitals. Prescription medications are usually covered by the public health insurance, but you may need to pay a co-payment. Over-the-counter medications can be purchased at pharmacies, which are widely available throughout Sopron. Overall, as a foreigner living in Sopron, you should be able to access a good standard of healthcare, provided you have the necessary insurance coverage," commented one expat who made the move to SOPRON, Hungary.
