As a foreigner living in Reykjavik, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Reykjavik if they have access to public healthcare in Reykjavik. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"As a foreigner living in Reykjavik, you will have access to public healthcare, provided you have a valid residence permit and are registered in the Icelandic National Registry. The public healthcare system in Iceland is of high quality and offers a wide range of services, including primary care, specialist consultations, hospital care, and emergency services. Healthcare centers, called heilsugæsla, are located throughout Reykjavik and provide primary care services. You may need to pay a small fee for some services, but overall, the cost of healthcare in Iceland is relatively low compared to other countries. It is important to note that waiting times for non-urgent specialist appointments and elective surgeries can be longer than in some other countries. However, emergency care is readily available and efficient," explained one expat living in Reykjavik, Iceland.
