As a foreigner living in Lucca, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Lucca if they have access to public healthcare in Lucca. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Lucca, you will have access to public healthcare. Italy's healthcare system is regionally based, so the quality and availability of services can vary. However, Lucca is known for having a good standard of healthcare. The public healthcare system in Italy is known as Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN) and it provides free or low-cost healthcare to residents, including foreigners who are legal residents. To access the SSN, you need to register with a local health authority, known as an Azienda Sanitaria Locale (ASL). Once registered, you will be issued a health insurance card, which you should carry with you at all times. This card entitles you to free or low-cost treatment from doctors, specialists, and hospitals within the SSN network. The healthcare system in Italy is generally of a high standard. Hospitals are well-equipped and doctors are highly trained. However, public hospitals can sometimes be crowded and waiting times can be long for non-emergency treatment. Pharmacies are widely available and are the first point of contact for minor health issues. They can provide advice and over-the-counter medication. In addition to the public healthcare system, there is also a wide range of private healthcare providers in Italy. Many expats choose to take out private health insurance to supplement the public healthcare system, as this can provide access to faster treatment and a wider choice of doctors and specialists. Overall, while the healthcare system in Italy has its challenges, you should be able to access a good standard of care in Lucca," explained one expat living in Lucca, Italy.
