As a foreigner living in Viareggio, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Viareggio if they have access to public healthcare in Viareggio. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Viareggio, you will have access to public healthcare. Italy's healthcare system is regionally based, so the quality and availability of services can vary. However, generally, the healthcare system in Italy is considered to be excellent and is ranked among the top in the world by the World Health Organization. In Italy, public healthcare is provided to all residents, including foreigners. This means that you will have access to doctors, specialists, and hospitals. Most services under the public healthcare system are free or require a small copayment. However, it's important to note that while public healthcare is available to all, there can be long waiting times for non-emergency procedures and specialist appointments. Therefore, many residents and expats also choose to have private health insurance to supplement the public healthcare system. The healthcare professionals in Italy are well-trained and many of them speak English, especially in larger cities and tourist areas. Pharmacies are widely available and are the first point of contact for minor health issues. In terms of emergency care, Italy has a good network of emergency rooms and ambulance services. The emergency number in Italy is 112, which can be dialed for immediate medical assistance. Overall, while the public healthcare system in Italy has its challenges, such as long waiting times for certain procedures, it provides comprehensive coverage and high-quality care. As a foreigner living in Viareggio, you should be able to access the healthcare services you need," explained one expat living in Viareggio, Italy.
