As a foreigner living in Sapporo, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Sapporo if they have access to public healthcare in Sapporo. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"Yes, as a foreigner living in Sapporo, you will have access to public healthcare. Japan has a universal healthcare system, which means that everyone, including foreigners, is required to be enrolled in a health insurance plan. This can either be a national health insurance provided by the government or an employee health insurance if you are working in Japan. The public healthcare system in Japan is known for its high standards of care. Hospitals and clinics are well-equipped and staffed with highly trained medical professionals. Most doctors and nurses in the city areas speak English, so communication should not be a major issue. However, it's important to note that while the insurance covers a large portion of the medical costs, you are still required to pay 30% of the total medical bill. This is still significantly lower than what you would pay in many other countries without insurance. Prescription medication is also covered by the insurance, but the same 30% copayment applies. Over-the-counter medication, on the other hand, is not covered by the insurance. In terms of dental care, basic procedures like check-ups, fillings, and extractions are covered by the insurance, but more complex procedures like orthodontics are not. In case of emergencies, Japan has a reliable ambulance service. However, it's worth noting that not all hospitals have an emergency department, so it's a good idea to know in advance which hospitals in your area do. Overall, Japan's public healthcare system is comprehensive and efficient, providing a high level of care to all residents, including foreigners," wrote a member who made the move to Sapporo, Japan.
