As a foreigner living in Nara, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Nara if they have access to public healthcare in Nara. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Nara, you will have access to public healthcare. Japan has a universal healthcare system, which means that everyone, including foreigners, is required to be enrolled in a health insurance plan. This can either be the National Health Insurance provided by the government or an Employees' Health Insurance if you are working for a company. The public healthcare system in Japan is known for its high standards of care. Hospitals and clinics are well-equipped, and doctors and nurses are highly trained. Most healthcare providers in Japan offer a comprehensive range of services, from general check-ups and preventative care to specialist treatments and surgeries. However, it's important to note that not all medical staff may be fluent in English, so there might be a language barrier. Some hospitals in larger cities have English-speaking staff or interpreters, but this may not always be the case in Nara. Under the Japanese healthcare system, you will typically pay 30% of the cost of any treatment you receive, with the government covering the rest. This applies to everything from doctor's appointments and medication to hospital stays and surgeries. Prescription medication is also covered by the healthcare system in Japan. If you have a prescription from a doctor, you will only need to pay 30% of the cost of the medication. In terms of dental care, basic treatments like check-ups, fillings, and extractions are covered by health insurance. However, more complex procedures and cosmetic treatments may not be covered. Overall, the public healthcare system in Japan is comprehensive and affordable, ensuring that you can access the medical care you need while living in Nara," explained one expat living in Nara, Japan.
