As a foreigner living in Yokohama, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Yokohama if they have access to public healthcare in Yokohama. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"Yes, as a foreigner living in Yokohama, you will have access to public healthcare. Japan has a universal healthcare system, which means that everyone, including foreigners, is required to have health insurance. This can either be through the National Health Insurance (NHI) system or employer-provided health insurance. The public healthcare system in Japan is known for its high standards of care. Hospitals and clinics are well-equipped, and doctors and nurses are highly trained. However, it's important to note that not all healthcare providers may have English-speaking staff, so there may be a language barrier. In terms of cost, while you do have to pay for health insurance, it covers 70% of most medical costs, with the patient paying the remaining 30%. This applies to everything from doctor's visits and tests to hospital stays and surgeries. Prescription medication is also covered by insurance, with patients paying 30% of the cost. However, over-the-counter medication is not covered. One thing to note is that healthcare in Japan is heavily regulated, and there are strict rules about what treatments and medications are covered by insurance. This means that some newer or more experimental treatments may not be covered. Overall, while navigating the healthcare system in a foreign country can be challenging, Japan's public healthcare system is comprehensive and provides high-quality care," said another expat in Yokohama, Japan.
