As a foreigner living in Gwangju, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Gwangju if they have access to public healthcare in Gwangju. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Gwangju, you will have access to public healthcare. The Korean healthcare system is universal and mandatory for all residents, including foreigners. Once you have your Alien Registration Card, you can enroll in the National Health Insurance Service. The healthcare in Korea is of high quality, with modern facilities and highly trained medical professionals. Many doctors and nurses speak English, especially in larger cities and hospitals. The system is a mix of Western and traditional Korean medicine, so you have a variety of treatment options. Public healthcare in Korea is not free, but it is heavily subsidized by the government, making it affordable. It covers a wide range of services, including consultations, treatments, surgeries, and prescription medications. However, some services, like cosmetic surgery or certain dental procedures, are not covered. Emergency care is also available for foreigners. In case of an emergency, you can dial 119 for an ambulance. The response time is usually very quick, and emergency treatment is provided regardless of your ability to pay at the time. Despite the high quality of care, the healthcare system in Korea can be quite busy. You may experience long wait times, especially at larger hospitals. It's also important to note that while the system is generally efficient, navigating it can be challenging if you don't speak Korean. Overall, the public healthcare system in Korea is accessible and reliable, providing comprehensive care to all residents, including foreigners," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Gwangju, Korea.
