As a foreigner living in Causeway Bay, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Causeway Bay if they have access to public healthcare in Causeway Bay. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"Yes, as a foreigner living in Causeway Bay, you will have access to public healthcare. The public healthcare system in Hong Kong is highly developed and is known for its efficiency and affordability. It is run by the Hospital Authority, which operates 43 public hospitals and institutions, 49 Specialist Out-patient Clinics, and 73 General Out-patient Clinics. The public healthcare system provides a comprehensive range of services, including preventive, curative, rehabilitative, and palliative care. It also offers emergency services and specialist treatments. The quality of care is generally high, with well-trained medical staff and modern facilities. However, it's worth noting that public hospitals and clinics can be crowded, and waiting times can be long, especially for non-emergency services. Also, while the cost of public healthcare is heavily subsidized by the government, there is still a fee for services, which is payable at the time of treatment. Communication in English can sometimes be a challenge in public hospitals, as most of the medical staff are more comfortable speaking Cantonese. However, most doctors and nurses have a good command of English. For these reasons, some expatriates choose to use private healthcare, which offers shorter waiting times and more personalized care, but at a significantly higher cost. It's also common for expats to take out private health insurance to cover these costs. In summary, while public healthcare in Hong Kong is accessible and of high quality, it does have its challenges, and it's worth considering all your options," wrote a member who made the move to Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.
