As a foreigner living in Cancun, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Cancun if they have access to public healthcare in Cancun. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"Yes, as a foreigner living in Cancun, you will have access to public healthcare. However, it's important to note that while public healthcare in Mexico is available to all residents, including foreigners, it is often crowded and may not offer the same level of care as private facilities. The public healthcare system in Mexico is known as the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS). It provides a wide range of services, from general check-ups and prescriptions to surgeries and emergency care. However, the system is often criticized for long waiting times and a lack of resources. Many expats and wealthier Mexicans prefer to use private healthcare, which is known for its high-quality services and shorter waiting times. It's also worth noting that while public healthcare is free or low-cost, private healthcare can be expensive, so it's recommended to have health insurance," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Cancun, Mexico.
