As a foreigner living in Baguio city, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Baguio city if they have access to public healthcare in Baguio city. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"As a foreigner living in Bagio City, Philippines, you will have access to public healthcare. However, it's important to note that while the Philippines has a universal healthcare system, the quality and availability of services can vary. In major cities like Baguio, public hospitals and clinics are generally well-equipped and staffed with trained medical professionals. However, these facilities can sometimes be crowded and waiting times can be long due to the high demand for services. The public healthcare system in the Philippines is funded by PhilHealth, the national health insurance program. As a foreigner, you can enroll in PhilHealth and pay the premium contributions to access the benefits, which include inpatient care, outpatient care, and emergency services. Despite these services, many expatriates choose to get private health insurance for more comprehensive coverage. Private hospitals in the Philippines often offer a higher standard of care, with more modern facilities and shorter waiting times. Some even have partnerships with international insurance companies, making it easier for foreigners to access their services. In terms of pharmacies, they are widely available throughout Baguio City and most medications can be purchased without a prescription. However, it's recommended to bring a sufficient supply of any necessary prescription medications, as not all drugs available in other countries may be available in the Philippines. Overall, while public healthcare is accessible in Baguio City, it's advisable for foreigners to also consider private health insurance for more extensive coverage and peace of mind," said a member in Baguio city, Philippines.
