What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Afghanistan. They wrote...
"One of the most challenging aspects of the local culture that expats in Afghanistan find difficult to navigate is the complex religious and social customs. Since the country is mainly comprised of Muslim people, there is a large cultural divide between those who practice different faiths and those who adhere strictly to Islamic values. Expats must be aware of different cultural taboos and etiquette as locals believe it is extremely important to respect the cultural norms of their society. Additionally, some Afghan customs such as the custom of women wearing a head scarf and being accompanied by a male guardian when in public can often be confusing or intimidating for foreigners. Another difficult cultural challenge that expats face is the complex tribal and clan structures as these are often difficult to understand and can cause misunderstandings among locals and expats. Finally, the lack of reliable infrastructure and basic services such as electricity and plumbing can be a challenge for many expats used to the conveniences of a modern society," said another expat in Afghanistan.
