About Elementary School
Elementary education in the Czech Republic, known as základní škola, is compulsory for children from the age of 6 to 15 and typically consists of two stages: the first stage for grades 1-5 and the second stage for grades 6-9. The curriculum includes a broad range of subjects, such as Czech language, mathematics, science, social studies, and foreign languages, with English being the most commonly taught second language. Schools focus on developing key competencies, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. The Czech elementary education system is known for its high academic standards and emphasis on student participation. After completing elementary education, students take entrance exams to continue their education at either a general secondary school, a vocational school, or a technical school, depending on their interests and academic performance. The Czech Republic also offers a number of international and bilingual schools, which can be an attractive option for foreign nationals seeking education in a language other than Czech.
