Living Behind Bars and Walls. (Life in the Dominican Republic)

I'm writng this post to new expats looking to move to the Dominican Republic. I nevr once took in consideration the concept of all inclusive resorts before I moved to the Dominican Republic in November 2012. I thought to myself that the people who selected the resorts just came for the beach and privacy. Now after 5 months of living in Santo Domingo, I understand why the all inclusive resorts have walls surrounding the resort and the common folk are on the other side. In the city, every house and apartment has bars covering the doors , windows, and patio's. God forbid a fire breaks out and the person with the key has left the building. I even noticed highrise buildind with bars across the windows and patio ten flights in the air. I say to myself, " what thief is going to scale a wall ten stories in the sky to burglarize you"? The houses not only have bars on windows, doors, and patio's, they have a six foot wall surrounding the house as well. Then I go into the community and I see armed guards with shotguns at gas stations, banks (atm's), supermarkets, and an assortment of other stores and business's. Suddenly I start to think back to the all inclusive resort with the walls. I start getting the image in my mind of the movie KING KONG, where there was a giant wall to seperate the native people from the creatures behind the wall from killing and eating them. And that my friends sums up this Americans experience of 5 months living in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Now there are many true events that I can share with you to ad to my assesment of the Dominican Republic. If you can deal with this stuff, then I welcome you. If you are faint of heart, then stay home my friends.
