Private healthcare

I have read that, if you want to purchase a good private healthcare plan, it must be done prior to reaching the age of 65? I'm not sure if that's true or not, but would love some input. We are looking at retiring in the Punta Cana area with 5-7 years, but hopefully sooner. My husband and I both will be over the age of 65 at that point so if it's true, can it be purchased while we're still living in Florida? So many things to consider.... By the way, we plan to get residency, etc. He is originally from the DR (many moons ago), we've researched the process to establish residency and then possibly citizenship. Healthcare is our biggest concern for retirement.
