UN operation in Haiti welcomes ‘calm’ Senate elections

22 June 2009 – The United Nations mission in Haiti has paid tribute to the people of the impoverished country and its security forces for holding well-run Senate elections yesterday.
The second round of voting for seats in the Senate were conducted peacefully in all nine departments, the mission, known as MINUSTAH, said in a news release.

MINUSTAH noted that the few attempts to disrupt the run-off resulted in an appropriate response from the Haitian National Police, supported by UN blue helmets, allowing the elections to proceed normally.

The mission praised Haitians for fulfilling their civic duty in turning out at polling stations and, noting improvements in the organization of the second round of voting, thanked all the national and international partners who supported the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) in implementing its mandate.

MINUSTAH voiced hope that the sense of calm and responsibility observed during the elections so far will continue until the final publication of results, for which the mission will provide logistical and technical support.
