The truth about healthcare

I keep reading posts and comments stating that an expat should get private health insurance and not rely on the public health system. But I haven't seen any mention of the issues I am encountering trying to do that:

1) Some of the private health insurers charge ridiculously high monthly fees -- as much as $1,500 a month in one case.

2) The ones who have responded to me thus far say they don't cover pre-existing conditions.

3) None of the health insurers websites state that they cover prescription medication

So what's the real story?
