Getting a Job Before Arrival

What is the best way to secure a job in Australia before getting there? Our long term goal is to become citizens, so we want to start out with a permanent resident visa if possible. My fiancé is a barred Attorney, and we want to try and secure a skilled worker visa (we will be married by then). We are also open to getting (her) a student visa- as she has one year left in her G.I. Bill (the US military budget covers all costs from tuition to housing for post-secondary studies), and she could take courses on Australian law for a year.

The plan for myself is to try and find a job as a forklift operator until I am able to become a permanent resident/ citizen so that I can receive government financial aid to go to college at Melbourne University.

Any information, advice, or anecdotes welcome! We are going to be settling around Melbourne so when the time is right I can attend the university there.
