Im currently in a tough spot.
Ive made my living as a poker player for the last 10 years. I live in Australia (Australian Citizen) but typically spend 4-5 months a year in the US and Canada playing each year to earn my income (Multiple Trips). Recently I fell in love with a Russian girl and got Married. We have a 2 year old son and we live in Australia.
Working in North America means spending long periods of time away from my wife and son and its not good for our family. I earn good money and don't wont to settle down to a depressing low payed grind of a job in Australia.
My wifes Russian passport means that she cant come with me to the USA/Canada.
It seems that Bahamas is the only place in the area that will accept us both.
I had an idea that we could move there for a year or two and I could make regular trips to the USA to play poker.
Ive been to Nassau a couple of times as a tourist but dont know the place very well.
So here are my questions ....
Do we just turn up and then keep applying for an extension on our tourist visa ?
We would want to live in a safe place because I would have to leave my family alone for a few days at a time. How much would a small apartment in a safe place cost per month ?
Also is it a safe place in general ? Ive heard some horror stories about rape and robbery etc of expats etc..
Im worried my wife and son might not fit in to the community there. My son would have to go to Kindergarten. Do you think that would work out ?
Also, Im worried US customs might freak out when I start doing three vists a month as a weird looking man with and Australian passport who is temporarily living in the Bahamas. They might think Im some kind of drug Barron and ban me. Has anybody had any bad experiences with them ?
Mark.
