Belgium TV systems

Hello all,
Am sure this has probably been discussed already, but anyway....

I'm a British translator working in Paris. I have recently found out that I will be relocating to Brussels, probably in the New Year.

My problem is this: when I moved to Paris, I bought (as you do) a French TV and DVD player....

Being aware of the whole PAL/SECAM nightmare - i.e. French TV is SECAM and Belgium being PAL, I bought a TV that was (so I thought) PAL & SECAM compatible. In the user manual, under "tuner/reception/transmission" the TV has "PAL, SECAM".

However, after asking the manufacturer's oh so helpful call centre, they are now telling me that in fact a French TV CANNOT be used in Belgium - they are citing that the VHF and UHF systems are different...apparently in France these are both "L" and in Belgium these are "B" and "H" respectively.....

Does anyone know anything about these? What are VHF and UHF?
While I'm on a related subject, does this whole issue affect DVD recorders????? Because the DVD recorder I bought will obviously be a French one......

Am very confused........
