How does healthcare work? (a very common question I suspect)

I guess my top question for the moment is how does being entered into the healthcare system work, I believe one has to maintain health insurance in the states, before one becomes a citizen of Belgium, but I am unsure of how those two systems interact with one another and how one navigates the system. I have engaged a relocation agent to aid in navigating my move out there, but figured I would try to get a least a brief overview before she begins to work with me later in the year.
