Researching Belize

I am planning a visit to Belize next year to explore the possibilities of living there permanently. I would like to rent a place for a few months to get the feel of the surroundings to make sure I am making the right decision. As a middle aged disabled woman traveling alone, I was wondering about the safest areas to rent a little place. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
