moving to brazil

Hi
I'm an Australian who is moving to Brazil in September. I don't know anyone there and I don't speak Portuguese (yet). I was wondering if anyone could help me with information about finding and renting a place to live. I don't have much of a budget so the cheaper the better until I can find work (I am an English teacher). How would I go about finding rental listings and which areas in or around Rio are cheap and safe.

I will be landing in Rio but I'll go wherever the work takes me.
