Planning to relocate to Montreal region

Hello: We are just starting off on the exciting adventure of relocating to Canada. I am retired and do some parttime yoga and pilates teaching. My partner will retire in the about 5 years. We are looking at establishing residency over the next 1-2 years and are wondering if people rented, leased or how you selected a neighborhood. We will spend time in the US and continue to own a home there as we have children and family there. I would prefer to go to BC eventually but for the near future we must go to the Montreal area. Please share your input as to whether you took apts. first to get to experience and know the communities before purchasing. Also does anyone rent or live in a seasonal area along the St. Lawrence or one of the many lakes? Has anyone tried to put their home in a short=term rental program while in their home country or traveling? Lastly, if anyone has connections with medical research at major teaching hospitals or is involved in stem cell research and applications, please contact me! Thanks!
