Do foreigners seek for permanent residence or are they satisfied with temporary visas?

Hello,

I am an American and about to retire. I seek to establish an off-grid living home where I can also grow my own food.

My plan was to establish permanent residency as I was going to do in New Zealand (until I discovered that NZ uses 1080 poisoning). However, a real estate agent told me that he has been living in Chile since I believe 2004 and he has yet to even open a bank account!

He then told me that MOST foreigners just go over the border every 90 days and come back. That seems like an awful hassle and not really a long-term solution.

Can those of you who have been living there for a while and or those who plan on living there permanently, please give me your views and advise as to how to best decide?

If anything needs clarification, please ask and I can elaborate.

Thanks,
Jorge
