apartments with no kitchens?

I'm a 30 year old moving to China from the U.S. I'll be making a decent living teaching at an international school in Guangzhou. I can afford a good 1 bedroom in the city center, but my recruiter has suggested that I try a new type of apartment which has shared kitchen space rather than kitchen space in the actual apartment. It's half as expensive.

Question is: is this very typical for 30 year olds in China to live in an apartment without a kitchen? Obviously I want to save money but not if it will seem juvenile for someone my age.
