Visit to Cartagena

We would like to visit Cartagena for the first time. Duration can be from 5 days to a couple weeks. I am told to make sure I stay in and tour the old city but that it only takes 3-5 days to do so. If I stay in the old city is there a certain area recommended for something pretty comfortable/modern but not necessarily big or not top $$$ (hotel/condo/apt) or do I just look on AirBnB or FincaRaiz.com?

I was told to stay away from the beach area but would it be worth to stay a few days along/near the waterfront and explore that area also? We love beaches but don't usually go in the water.
We have been to Medellín before but wanted to get a feel for the coastal area. I have also been encouraged to check out St Marta but from what I can tell it is mostly just a tourist hot spot.

This is kind of a scouting trip to get a feel for the Atlantic coast of Colombia for possible future 'snowbirding' for a couple months each year. Any other areas suggested we might want to check out?
We lived in Panama for a year so are not totally newbies in expat traveling.
