Theft by Niece of Girlfriend

9 months into a relationship and I was wanting to give my girlfriend a vacation so we left for a long weekend in San Andreas and my girlfriend's niece was apartment and cat sitting. Woke up late the next morning and found that the US cash I had (poorly) hidden was all gone (it was a lot) and the bills were all replaced with bad color copies of one of the $100 dollar bills.
My girlfriend may or may not have been in on the theft and I have no video proof of the niece stealing it -but: motive, means, opportunity all point to guilt.
Niece and girlfriend live in a barrio that is too dangerous for me to go.
I reported the theft to the police before I figured out it was the niece. Cops left without searching bags of the girlfriend (I looked) or the niece (I did not look in her bag). Went to the Prosecutor's office for an intake on a "denunciation." Plan to "denounce" the niece in a couple of days at most because I texted girlfriend that I was willing to negotiate and not call the police for a return of at least some of the money.
Figure I may need a private detective who is comfortable looking into purchases by the 20 year old niece or girlfriend. Other than that any advice? I do not need to be told to get a safe and to never tell a Colombian woman where money is or how much there is. I realize the reality that gringo men are simply here to be milked (if the girlfriend is a poor girl with minimal education etc.) -just looking for advice not insults like "what an idiot" etc.
Thanks!
