Salento Safety and Recomendations

Currently living in Medellin but hoping to take a trip to Salento. Anyone who knows about the current safety situation in the area -is it safe to travel by bus? AND in anyone knows of a decent guide with a vehicle to see some of the sights....recommendations for hotel/hostels. Thanks in Advance!
