Does Netflix in Colombia have One Hundred Years of Solitude? I watched it a few weeks ago, and Netflix did a fantastic job! I first read the novel by Colombian Nobel Laureate Gabriel García Márquez back in my undergrad days, and it didn’t go well. I wanted to experience it in its original language, so I attempted to read it in Spanish. That didn’t work out—I only made it about a quarter of the way through. I later picked up an English copy and finished it, but it was still a challenging read. Keeping track of the characters and the intricate "Buendia" family tree was the hardest part for me. By the way, García Márquez was an avid (and "woke," whatever that means) socialist who was close friends with Fidel Castro. Despite that, the novel remains an incredible work of art. One aspect that stood out to me was the depiction of the classic struggle between liberals and conservatives in 19th century Colombia, which felt surprisingly relevant to today’s political climate. Interestingly, García Márquez presented both sides as irrational, maintaining an impartial tone. I highly recommend the movie—it filled in some gaps I didn’t fully grasp when reading the book.
