Driving in Colombia

Well I'm just full of questions lately. In this case I'm looking for opinions regarding driving. Instead of renting a car from Cali to Salento, there is now talk of ME renting a car and driving. Like the Rainman, I'm an excellent driver and all, but I've got some reservations about driving in Colombia...I'm actually a little scared to do it since it is such a free for all. Another part of me is saying grow a set of nuts and just do it. My woman says she will help me along regarding the craziness on the roads. Anyway, what are your experiences driving in Colombia? I know it is easy to just take taxis or busses everywhere which is what I've been doing in my travels over the past 20 years.
