Travelling in and out of Denmark with Residence Permit

Hi,
I am a student from Australia and I am about to study on exchange at University of Copenhagen this fall semester. I have already arranged accommodation, and the rental contract has already begun, but my Residence Permit validity start date is 1 August. Can anyone help me with some questions I have? I am about to travel around Europe before arriving in Copenhagen for the start of the semester at the start of September, and I am thinking of dropping off my main luggage at my residence in Copenhagen, then leaving for the trip, before 1 August. Is this allowed? Do I need to register for a CPR number within 5 days, and will I be able to travel out and back into Denmark without a residence card? Or will this risk having my Residence Permit voided? I was thinking that since Australians can enter for 90 days without a visa, this would be ok, but I am worried the rules that apply if I am considered an official resident.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
