Short term apartments

I am planning on spending 2 months in EC this summer to get a better idea of the country and where we would want to live.
If this were you, would you base yourself in, let's say, the north, then the south, and then the coast? Rent a little vacation apartment in eash area, or just travel and stay in hotels?
Ahhhh.... and would it be crazy to rent a car for a couple months?
