Paying in Ecuador

As we travel to EC to spend some time there to evaluate if it would be a match for us a question keeps popping up.What is the best way to finance the trip? I understand Travelers checks, large bills, and even credit cards are a problem in all places with exception of the larger cities. Cash is not very wise because of crime and pickpockets. So what is the best way to pay for food, small bed and breakfast, transportation etc?Is it to use a credit card or bank card in an ATM machine daily or as you need? I also understand these machines are not everywhere specially if you are traveling to smaller towns or the outskirts of the city. I would appreciate some input in this area and your experiences. I don't want to be carrying $500 dollars on me if I can avoid it.
