With the full moon in perigee (closest to the earth) this weekend the tides here on the coast have been especially high, and low.
So with our bikini's, shorts, and plenty of sun screen my friend and I went for a hike along the reef at the base of of the cliffs of Anconcito (the area known as La Diablica.) It was a great experience.
There were many family groups out today -- more than usual for Sunday afternoons, which is family day on the beach. And some of the folks carried empty 2L soda bottles with a hole cut on top, and a kitchen knife. Being a couple of curious gringas we asked what that was for. They were out collecting a delicacy -- small mollusks that live under the rock outcroppings. Sea escargot. Of course we tried to find some -- we found a grand total of 1...guess we need more practice.
The area around the cliffs extends for about 3 or 4 miles and is only reached by foot or boat. Our friends with the escargot were part of a family group that had actually come ashore in the high tide Saturday night and beached their fishing boat far up on the sand. The boat itself looks like a super sized row boat and tipped on it's side with the bottom towards the sea, made an excellent cabin to camp in for the weekend.
We found some beautiful tide pools and soaked in the warm sea water in what looked like luxury natural bath tubs.
The ebb tide was especially calm and we went swimming as well and saw some folks out snorkeling. When the tide turned in the afternoon the diving ended and the surfers and boarders came out.
We found some more seashells to add to the ever growing collection and a had a great time just "being."
Now down on the beach there are a few bonfires and out in the distance where we walked where the boat/cabin is we can see their bonfire as well.
The bright, still almost full moon, is throwing moon shadows everywhere. Yes I am humming that tune as I look down on the beach.
Was a nice day in this part of Ecuador.
