One of the nice things about living where I do is I am in the country -- no crowds, rural existence, starry nights -- but also just 15 minutes from la Libertad/Salinas and the El Paseo Shopping Center (which everyone refers to as el Shopping.
At the mall is a large store I would compare to a super Target or Walmart. It has a supermarket, where I purchase most of my dry goods, cleaning supplies, beverages, toiletries amd such; plus a housewares department, small electronics and household appliances (kitchen needs as well as fridge and stoves). There is also an auto dept, a hardware dept (el Ferrisariato) a toy store (Mi Jugeteria) and shoes and clothing (Rio Store)
Hypermarts can be found throughout Ecuador.
Since I do so much shopping there I purchased their discount card -- which cost $30 a year -- and gives about 10% off everything you purchase. And today's discover was if -- or for me when -- you lose the card, the replacement cost is just $1.80!
By the way, they often have promotions. Currently we are collecting stickers to purchase some extra cookware. Last year was some really nice dishes. And you often get, attached to your receipt, a coupon for 2x1 tickets to the local SuperCine movie theater (I have so many I give them as extras to the kids who work for me.) When you get your receipt, make it a habit to stop by the service desk and trade in your coupons for whatever promotion is going on as well. Same for buying toiletries (and there is a separate cashier (caja) in that area -- and see if there is a promotion. I've received some really neat extras (bath sponges, lipsticks, hair care samples.)
