getting your drivers license in Ecuador

I have read how to get a drivers license in Ecuador and realize, both, that you have little time to do it in once you have made the residency move (90 days as I recall), and that there is a class and test you must take. The training class is in Spanish as are the tests (of course) but I am not sure that my language skills are good enough to take a class. I speak a bit but I cannot imagine that I could survive a lecture. I am also pretty sure I am not to be the first worried ex-pat student. How have you handled this? Was it difficult? Do you need a license for all motorized vehicles? Can you take a translator with you, either in person or electronic? I can't imagine not driving, I am afraid it would be a deal breaker for any long term plans. Thanks in advance for your replies.
