My wife and I are headed to Cuenca for a couple of weeks the end of August. We will be arriving in Guayaquil late on Aug. 26 and heading up to Cuenca the next day. We plan to fly back to southern Cal on Sept. 10. Our open plan right now is to spend as much time in Cuenca as possible. Real retirement is about 1.5 years away and I can hardly wait.
We could use some help since neither of us has ever been to Ecuador. Here are some of our questions:
We would like to travel via van between Guayaquil and Cuenca to get a look at the countryside. Any suggestions or persons we could contact to make the trip up to Cuenca? Costs?
We will need a place to stay while in Cuenca. Suggestions as to locations to stay while in the city? Anybody have an extra room to rent? Or an apartment for our two weeks there? Bed and breakfasts? Hostels? Costs?
What is the climate like in Cuenca in the winter? i am guessing it is somewhat the same all year long - middle to upper 60's for highs and middle 50's for lows?
Any English speaking congregations in Cuenca?
I am a retired Presbyterian pastor, currently working at a Community Senior Center, and my wife no longer works outside the home. We love adventures and opportunities to meet others in foreign countries. My Spanish is pretty rustic, but I can usually get around. (It is amazing what a little sign language and some facial expressions can convey. Humility and respect for others always go a long way too, in my experience.) We belong to the Hospitality Club and have hosted a few people from other countries in our home over the years, which is always a blessing for us!
