Hello, I am very interested in Ecuador

I'm wondering if it is feasible to live there on about 1,100 $ US per month ?? Anywhere, there. I am retired, but in decent shape. I love mountains, but abhor large cities. I probably wouldn't "do" much, just tourist about a lot. I do not plan on a car. Is the bus system OK ?
Are the mountains safe ?? I'd not want to run into coca folks.
I would love to join any clubs or whatever, where I could help teach locals about computers, like HTML and Java and stuff. Do folks barter ?? I'd do a website for a chicken or two.
But I would want to be sure I could meet my bills without having to work. I'd be on a pension from the US.
I am trying to avoid "services" (for expats) as they all seem geared towards younger, working kids- as they should be.
BUT, for a guy like me, the US has little to keep me here. I'm poor enough to be in constant fear of becoming homeless. I'd also have to be in an unusual legal status, as my pension is Federal, which means I lose it if I don't play the game correctly re.: laws about residency, etc. I can't fully ex-pat and have an income, unless, of course, it became feasible, like I could get enough work.
Espanol is sort of a pain, but I am learning.
Please point me at any good sources for more info, even though I am far from having explored even this website.
I am about a year out on deciding, plus, I will do a tourist stint there first. I do know to do that ! LOL...
I have lived in foreign countries before and don't even consider myself to be a typical "american"... I know better ! You have to respect folks to get respect.
Thanks in advance for any guidance... and I'll be visiting this forum often.
