I was watching CNN International news in English last night and at prime time they had a little short about the 'phenomena' of expats flocking to Ecuador. I couldn't believe I was seeing little Cotacachi on world news! They showed scenes from the International Living conference in Quito and chief honcho Lee Harrison spoke...apparently Cuenca is #1 with Quito following...the main reason stated was Cost of Living. I admit that we went to Cotacachi on Sunday for my birthday dinner and saw alot of expats there in the restaurant, but I have to say they struck us as an unlikely bunch! Oh well, as Carol would say, "when the honeymoon period is over..."
So there are about 700-800 expats in Cuenca now and Cotacachi must have over a hundred.....seemingly more quiet and older folks, perhaps on a smaller budget. There really doesn't seem like there is much to do around the Cotacachi area unless you have your own projects...alot of the expats there are in gated communities and apartments. I would not want to be in an apartment anywhere, would feel too claustrophobic. It must be really difficult for these folks who do not speak the language. At least some of you speak French already!
