Planning a Get Acquainted Trip

My wife and I are planning a trip in the March-April timeframe to have a look around Ecuador and hopefully find a town to call home in the near future. This trip is really about exploring what the different parts of the country have to offer and to get a better understanding of what to expect as a long-term tourist.

We both like living near the beach so we will probably spend most of our time looking in the coastal areas.

We're not really looking for "traditional" gringo type housing. The way I look at it, if I'm gonna live there... I want to live there... if that makes any sense at all.

We'd really appreciate any suggestions or input you might have regarding where to start, where to look, what to avoid, etc. Which airport is better to start / end from... really, anything you might find useful!
